FAQs

WHAT IS 20/20 VISION?
It is measurement of sight in high contrast (black on white) conditions.  If you can see the designated letter for 20/20 on a chart at 20 ft you have 20/20 eyesight.  If you have to be closer, say10 ft away, to see the same size letter you have 20/40 eyesight.  The Snellen Test which measures what we call acuity does not mean you have perfect vision since it is only a measurement of one facet of vision.  In fact many people with 20/20 acuity still require eyeglasses to give them efficient and comfortable vision. In this world of computers, ebooks and reading in general more is required than just 20/20 acuity.

WHAT IS LOW VISION REHABILITATION?
This care involves working with people who have lost their vision or acuity due to macular degeneration, diabetes, glaucoma, stroke, and other conditions.  It involves determining what low vision devices such as telescopic, microscopic, magnifiers, tints and lighting can be used to improve and help people see again.

WHAT IS VISUAL THERAPY REHABILITATION?
This care involves working with patients that have difficulty with vergence (eye coordination) and accommodation (focusing) systems. This results in lack of ability of the eyes to work together (binocular) resulting in fatigue, headaches, and general discomfort when reading and using the computer and difficulty with depth perception.

WHAT IS DRY EYE THERAPY REHABILITATION?
The natural tears that your eyes produce are composed of three layers: the outer oily layer, the middle aqueous watery layer, and the inner mucus layer.  Dry eye is the term used to describe eyes that that do not produce enough tears with proper composition of these layers.  Dry eye therapy is an approach to reestablish the proper composition of the tear layer so your eyes are not bothered by the typical symptoms of  burning, watering, red, and generally uncomfortable eyes.

WHAT IS COMPUTER SYNDROME VISION CARE?
Have you noticed that the days at work seem to be getting longer.  At three o'clock in the afternoon you're tired, your eyes burn and feel dry, and you've lost all zip and efficiency.  Well, you may be suffering from what is called computer syndrome or visual fatigue.  The answer maybe special glasses or visual therapy mentioned above.

WHAT IS SPORTS VISION?
Your vision, just like the strength in your arms and the speed in your legs plays an important part in how well you play the game.  Just like exercise and practice can increase your strength and speed, there are ways you can improve your visual fitness. Visual acuity(clarity of vision), eye coordination and other visual skills are necessary for good visual performance.  Of equal importance is eye protection during sports activities.

WHAT IS OCULAR NUTRITION?
Many conditions of the eye can be helped by a healthy diet and by supplementation of nutrients (vitamins, minerals, carotenoids such as lutein/zeaxanthin).  The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) is a major clinical trial sponsored by the National Eye Institute to determine if supplements could be of benefit to help and stabilize various ocular conditions.  These landmark studies provided strong evidence that nutrients in the form of supplements could delay the progression of various ocular conditions.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GAS PERMEABLE AND SOFT LENSE?
Both lense materials are breathable of an equal amount.  The difference is the gas permeable lense is a more rigid material and not as flexible as a soft lense.  For this reason different vision problems respond better to one material than another. About 30% of the population of contact lense wearers are able to wear the gas permeable lense because of comfort issues.  The soft lense by far is the most popular lense because of comfort but the gas permeable lense frequently gives the clearest and sharpest vision.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SPECTACLE LENSES?
The technology today has advanced spectacle lenses to the state of the art in optics. Lense material allow for the creation of thin lenses in all powers, anti-reflective treatment such as Crizal Avance to reduce glare, reflections and give the lenses a thinner look, transition lenses of different tints and darkness to adjust to different lighting conditions, corrected curve lenses to reduce aberrations and improve optical clarity.
